Italy: Environmental Ministry approves National Waste Prevention Program

The Italian Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea has approved a National Program for Waste Prevention, required by, the Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC. The Program focuses on 5 specific waste streams, including packaging waste. To reduce packaging, the Ministry will encourage manufacturers and retailers to use more refillable packaging and the public to drink tap instead of bottled water. Financial instruments the government will pursue include new extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes, and a review of and possible changes to landfill taxes (Recycling Laws International, 11 October 2013).
