Antimicrobial packaging from industrial food by-products

23 November 2015

Researchers at the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA) in Spain have developed antimicrobial packaging by using biodegradable materials obtained from industrial food by-products in a melt blending process.
The methodology applied allows the use of low doses of stabilized silver nanoparticles in the polymer matrix, without additives, which exhibits prolonged antimicrobial activity and enhanced oxygen barrier properties. These materials are of interest in the development and design of biodegradable active food packaging materials and antibacterial food contact surfaces. An article about the research is published in Innovative Food Science & Emerging Technologies.
