USA: EPA announces recipients for People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) grants

31 October 2013

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the 2013 recipients of EPA's People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Phase I grants. 40 teams of graduate and undergraduate students are each receiving a $15,000 grant for research proposals that develop solutions to real-world environmental challenges.
As one of the recipients the University of Massachusetts team will develop biodegradable food packaging as an alternative to non-degradable plastics. The goal of this research project is to develop and test a bio based packaging solution with significantly improved barrier properties, especially to oxygen and water vapor (News Item Packaging Digest, 28 October 2013).
