USA: 66.7% aluminum beverage cans recycled in 2013

08 October 2014

Aluminum beverage cans are the most recycled beverage packaging type in the US with an industry recycling rate of 66.7% in 2013, according to new data. This marks the third consecutive year the rate has held above 65%, compared to an average rate of 54% reported during the previous decade. Much of the growth in recent years has come from the addition of imported used cans entering the U.S. recycling stream.
The new rate means that the industry recycled 1.72 billion pounds of used aluminum beverage cans – the equivalent of 60.2 billion cans. The Aluminum Association began reporting an annual recycling rate in 1972, with a rate of 15.4%. (Press Release Aluminum Association, 24 September 2014).
