UK Scotland: commitment to implement plain packaging of cigarettes in 2014-15 reaffirmed

13 November 2013

Despite challenges by the tobacco industry, the Scottish Government will press ahead with plans to introduce plain packaging in 2014/2015, the Minister for Public Health has confirmed. He said that to build a generation free from tobacco it is necessary to restrict the imagery and design that tobacco companies use to pull in another generation to use these products.
He also said that he is very encouraged by the early findings coming out of Australia following implementation of plain packaging there, supporting the existing evidence showing that plain packaging reduces the appeal of tobacco products (News Release The Scottish Government, 8 November 2013).
