UK: Consultation on proposed single-use plastic bag charge

11 December 2013

On November 25, the United Kingdom launched a “Call for Evidence” (similar to a public consultation) on a proposed five-pence charge on single-use plastic carrier bags. The call for evidence closes on December 20.
The plastic bag regulations will apply only to retailers and organizations with more than 250 employees. The call for evidence asks for stakeholder input on a number of subjects, including subjects: the decomposition effectiveness of biodegradable and compostable bags on land, at sea and in anaerobic digesters, the effect of labeling biodegradable and compostable bags as such on waste streams and possible exemptions to the fee (Recyling Laws International, 2 December 2013).
