Fish packaging with built-in nose

07 November 2013

When you take the fish out of its packaging at home, it is immediately clear whether the fish is fresh or not. But by that time you are at home. PhD student Jenneke Heising is developing packaging with a built-in nose that, by using your smartphone, can tell you in the shop how fresh the fish is.
Heising studied the use of sensors the pH value, conductivity or ammonia and she found conductivity was the most usable. Finally the research should result in a small chip that is packaged with the fish and that informs you how fresh the fish is. An article about the research was published in The Journal of Food Engineering (News Item Wageningen UR, 5 November 2013).
