US EPA: Rule management of pharmaceutical hazardous waste

26 November 2015

Some pharmaceutical waste is considered hazardous and is regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Recently, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed a rule to simplify and improve the management of such hazardous waste pharmaceuticals at hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
In addition to standardizing and simplifying compliance requirements for health care facilities, the EPA says the proposed regulations will save healthcare facilities and pharmaceutical reverse distributors money and prevent up to 6,400 tons of hazardous waste pharmaceuticals from entering US waterways each year (State Recycling Laws Update, 2 November 2015).
