US: New York moves forward with ban on EPS packaging

03 February 2015

The New York Mayor has announced that the city is moving forward with a ban on polystyrene foam (extruded polystyrene or EPS) carryout food packaging, making NYC the largest US city to ban the material. The ban also applies to loose polystyrene foam “shipping peanuts.” The bill to create the ordinance was introduced in the New York City Council in 2013.
An outreach and education effort about the ordinance is getting underway, and the ban will not take effect until July 1. Violating the ordinance a first time could produce a fine of up to $250. Second and third violations could produce fines of up to $500 and $1,000, respectively (State Recycling Laws Update, 9 January 2015).
