Speech by Dutch minister Asscher about robotisation of labour

31 October 2014

In a recent speech Dutch minister Asscher talked about the robotisation of labour. He said that we cannot take it for granted that the unemployment level will return to the low level of before the crisis. Because of the rapid development of robots and other technologies the future may be drastically different than the present. He quotes Keynes: We are being afflicted with a new disease of which some readers may not yet have heard the name, but of which they will hear a great deal in the years to come – namely, technological unemployment. This means unemployment due to our discovery of means of economizing the use of labor outrunning the pace at which we can find new uses for labor.
