Research shows mineral oil migration can be controlled in recycled packaging

10 April 2013
A study by researchers in Switzerland and Germany suggests that inner bags can significantly reduce chemical contaminants from recycled packaging. The researchers, including those from the Official Food Control Authority of the Canton of Zurich, tested the migration of residues from recycled paperboard into six different foods over nine months, measuring migration of printing ink compounds and phthalates, along with mineral oils. The study noted the ability of films based on polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate to absorb migrating materials (Newsletter Food Contact World Digest, 5 April 2013).
