NL: Deposit on large plastic bottles not abolished

18 June 2015

Dutch state secretary Mansveld has informed the House of Representatives in a letter that she is not going to give permission to abolish the deposit on large plastic bottles. The industry has not met all of the requirements stated in the Packaging Agreement 2013-2022. The Inspectorate for the Environment (ILT) has reported that packaging material containing PVC can still be found in the Dutch supermarkets.
A new reward system for cans and small plastic bottles is going to be developed. In this system consumers will not pay a deposit for the packaging. A pilot in a number of municipalities is expected to start in January 2016 (News Item Government of the Netherlands, 18 June 2015).
