NL: No mandatory deposit for beer bottles

02 October 2014

On 1 September 2014 state secretary Mansveld sent a letter to the Dutch House answering questions posed about the deposit for beer bottles. The questions were asked because of an article that stated that beer bottles were a problem in recreational areas. In The Netherlands a deposit system for one-way or reusable beer bottles is not mandatory. A number of breweries has chosen to use a deposit system for the reusable bottles.
In the letter the state secretary states that she is not planning to make a deposit system for beer bottles mandatory. The Dutch breweries hold 85% of the market and they have let her know that there have not been any major changes in the ratio of one-way and reusable bottles.
