NL: Producers mess around with labelling rules

01 September 2015

The Dutch consumer association (Consumentenbond) has found two types of misuse of nutrition claims. Producers wrongfully make their products look heathier than similar products, for example by putting ‘source of fibre’ on gingerbread, while all normal gingerbread is a natural source of fibres.
The Consumentenbond wants this malpractice to end and pleas for the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) to be given sufficient capacity to enforce the claims regulation, as was promised by Minister Schippers (Health, Welfare and Sport). The most striking examples of misleading claims have been put on the Wall of Shame of the Consumentenbond (Consumentenbond, 10 August 2015).
