NL: Effect warning message on packaging of poultry

29 October 2015

Since 2001, poultry in the Netherlands can only be sold in packaging containing a label with a warning message. The purpose of this warning message is to reduce foodborne infections in consumers, by transporting, preparing, and storing poultry under optimal conditions.
Research of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) shows 81% of consumers feels this warning message is important, and 22% intend to improve their food-handling behavior after reading the warning message. The RIVM therefore recommends to maintain the warning message on the packaging of poultry. This recommendation is based on a survey among 514 consumers (Synopsis RIVM report, 15 October 2015).
