NL: Government answers about banning free plastic bags

26 March 2015

On 26 February 2015 answers were published to questions posed by a member of parliament about the plans to reduce the number of plastic bags in the Netherlands.
State Secretary Mansveld states that for some plastic bags there is no adequate alternative. This is mainly the case for wet products like meat and fish, because of functionality and food safety reasons. In these cases, Mansveld will make an exception. Whether an exception will also be made for biobased or biodegrable bags is still to be determined. As the ban will only apply to bags that are provided at the checkout, it will not be necessary to make an exception for the plastic bags for fruit and vegetable in the supermarkets.
