NL: 1 in 3 finds doggy bag more and more normal

14 September 2015

The Dutch non-profit organisation Natuur & Milieu (Nature & Environment) is providing 50,000 free "doggy bags" (stylish, handled paperboard boxes) to restaurants to encourage diners to take home uneaten meal portions rather than have the portions become food waste.
Although consumer attitudes are changing, 47% of Dutch residents still feel embarrassed to ask their food server for a doggy bag, according to a recent survey. Embarrassment about taking home food may be one reason the Dutch hospitality industry wastes 51,000 tons of food annually. Natuur & Milieu also said Dutch attitudes are shifting toward greater doggy bag acceptability (Recycling Laws International, 31 August 2015).
