rPET, biobased polymers, glass and folding cartons
Plastic Recyclers Europe reports that a strong trend towards the use of recycled PET (rPET) due to increased demand is projected in a new Eunomia report (4.17 MB). With the increasing quality of materials, rPET could reach as much as 55% of total PET demand by 2030. According to a report (213 kB) by Rabobank, projected new capacity in China has the potential of disrupting global markets for intermediates that are the building blocks for virgin PET. The increase in capacity may further exacerbate the cost differential between virgin and rPET. A new nova report shows capacities and production data for all bio-based polymers in 2019 and a forecast for 2024. You can read more in the short version of the report (2.28 MB).
The EU production of glass packaging for food and beverage continues to grow according to latest figures published by FEVE (212 kB). The increase of 2.0% in tonnes and 1.9% in units recorded in the First Half Year 2019 corresponds to the best performance over the past 4 years. In a recent article, Smithers looks at five key opportunities for folding carton packaging.

Consumers and food
Evergreen Packaging® has released a whitepaper (163 kB) entitled ‘Sustainable Packaging Trends: How Millennials Will Change Packaging Forever’. University of Groningen research shows that consumers will not choose the more sustainable option automatically. The perceived quality of sustainable food plays a pivotal role for the consumer in this. Nudges aim to steer a person's decision to the 'wise' choice. Research at Utrecht University (in Dutch) shows that people's preferences are an important precondition for the influence a nudge has. Consumers may be wasting more than twice as much food as commonly believed, according to a WUR study published in PLOS ONE (968 kB). EFSA has expanded the Eurobarometer on food safety with five pre-accession countries. All the factsheets by country can be found here.
On 12 March 2020, Jan Blei will hold a speech entitled ‘Concept development of stand-up pouches on-the-go: A tool to select usability methods that involve users in NPD’ as part of his master assignment at the University of Twente. Chairman of the assessment committee is professor Roland ten Klooster who holds the NVC Chair Packaging Design and Management.
