ISO draft standard ease of opening published

16 January 2014

Recently draft standard ISO/DIS 17480 was published on the ease of opening in packaging. The standard applies to reclosable and non reclosable consumer packaging which will not require secondary mechanical means. It gives general and specific considerations.
The general considerations include context of use, opening strength, dexterity and cognition. The specific considerations include opening location, methods and mechanisms of opening the package, force and handling aspects and re-closing of the package. The standard has seven annexes including a consumer panel test for ease of opening. This test is based on NPR-EN/TS 15945 (World Packaging Standardisation Newsletter, January 2014).
