France: Senate report seeks to improve EPR programs’ contribution to improved eco-design

10 December 2013

The French Senate has released a report about extended producer responsibility (EPR) and its effect on the ecodesign of products as a means to reduce waste generation. France has 16 EPR programs, including packaging. The report analysed whether current EPR programs are reducing waste generation through better ecodesign, and if not, what changes need to be made.
Overall, the report states that results from EPR programs have been mixed. The report offers 22 recommendations for improvement. Among them are the encouragement of source separation of household waste and adding plastic film to the packaging EPR program (Recyling Laws International, 25 November 2013).
