EU: Specifications health warnings cigarette packages adopted

09 October 2015

An implementing act adopted on October 9th 2015 lays out specifications for the new combined health warnings on packages of tobacco products for smoking, which are required under the Tobacco Products Directive (2014/40/EU).
The new health warnings will comprise a colour photograph, a text warning on the harmful effects of smoking and smoking cessation information. These should collectively cover 65% of the front and back of packages. The act gives technical specifications for the layout, design and shape of the combined health warnings. The new health warnings will appear on packages across the EU from May 2016 (News Release European Commission, 9 October 2015).
