EU recommendations on reducing EU plastic bag consumption

04 February 2014

In November 2013 the European Commission published a proposal to reduce the consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags in the European Union. The following month, rapporteur Margrete Auken of the European Parliament’s ENVI Committee offered revisions and additions to the Commission’s proposals in a draft report.
Auken favors taxing traditional lightweight plastic carrier bags to reduce their consumption. Member States that have set up separate collection for bio-waste may require retailers to reduce the price of bio-based lightweight plastic carrier bags by up to 50%. The final report will be submitted to the full EP for a vote (Recycling Laws International, 8 January 2014).
