EFSA Opinion on post-consumer PET-recycling process PET-M

23 April 2015

According to Commission Regulation (EC) No 282/2008 of 27 March 2008 on recycled plastic materials intended to come into contact with foods and amending Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is requested to evaluate recycling processes for plastic waste. In this context, the Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) evaluated the process ‘PET-M’.
The Panel concluded that recycled PET obtained from the process PET-M is not of safety concern when it is used up to 60% to manufacture bottles and up to 90% to manufacture thermoformed trays and containers not used for packaging water (EFSA Journal, 13 April 2015).
