EFSA opinion nano-zinc oxide for use in food contact materials

04 May 2015

EFSA published a scientific opinion that deals with the safety assessment of zinc oxide, nanoparticles, uncoated and coated, for use as a transparent ultraviolet light absorber in all polyolefins. The substance is used as a powder in nanoform. In the final polymer, nanoparticles are still present but largely aggregated.
The CEF Panel concluded that zinc oxide does not migrate in nanoform, and therefore the safety evaluation focuses on the migration of soluble ionic zinc and the coating substance. Available migration data for ionic zinc are in compliance with the current specific migration limit, though the upper limit can be exceeded through dietary exposure (EFSA Journal, 13 April 2015).
