Effect oxygen absorbers on quality of cut gladiolus spikes

22 September 2015

Researchers at the NARO Institute of Floricultural Science in Japan studied a combination of PP film with oxygen absorbers for maintaining the quality of cut gladiolus ‘Princess Summer Yellow’ spikes.
Both the oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations within the polypropylene bags were lower with oxygen absorbers compared to packaging only. The results suggest that plastic film with oxygen absorbers is an easy way to decrease the oxygen concentration and maintain the quality of cut gladiolus spikes, and that pretreatment with silver thiosulfate complex improves bud opening after suboptimal temperature storage. An article about the research is published in Postharvest Biology and Technology.
