Antimicrobial effect nanocomposite packaging containing ZnO

26 October 2015

Recent advances in nanotechnology have opened new windows in active food packaging. Nano-sized ZnO is an inexpensive material with potential antimicrobial properties. Researchers at the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Iran evaluated the antibacterial effect of low density Polyethylene (LDPE) containing ZnO nanoparticles on Bacillus subtilis and Enterobacter aerogenes.
They found that, regarding the considerable antibacterial effects of ZnO nanoparticles, their application in active food packaging can be a suitable solution for extending the shelf life of food. An article about the research is published in Materials Science and Engineering: C.
