Kick-off platform European Packaging Gallery

01 October 2013

On 26 September 2013 the European Packaging Gallery (EPG), an initiative of the NVC Chair Packaging Design and Management and Het FoodAtelier, was opened. The kick-off took place in the Virtual Reality Lab on the campus of University of Twente. At the meeting both retailers (Jumbo, C1000), companies that pack products (including Zwanenberg, Grolsch, Cono Kaasmakers) and students/researchers were present. In the VR-lab the opportunities of this research facility was demonstrated. In the lab the way consumers interact with products, from consumer products to food packaging.
Roland ten Klooster, professor Packaging Design & Management at University of Twente and closely associated with the EPG, sees the following role for this innovation platform: transforming the gathered insights about packaging of food products into concrete solutions. The first project with the title Flowpack 2.0 aims at innovations in modified atmosphere packaging. During the opening Ten Klooster mentioned another example: the future of metal as food packaging material. Who thinks that this material doesn’t stand a chance compared with other - lighter - materials, like plastics, will be deceived. ‘Students have thought of all sorts of product market combinations that are viable, for example ready-to-heat solutions for fish or cheese fondue. Metal can, in contrast with most other materials, be heated, even in a microwave oven. This USP should be used’ (Website Food&Nutrition, 27 September 2013).
