Where might ‘plastic’ packaging be substituted by ‘fiber-based’ packaging?
A qualitative AI-augmented research study

Live Hybrid from the NVC Auditorium

On Wednesday 28 January 2026, Mariya Mank will present the final results of an NVC assignment addressing the substitution of linear polymer materials (PP, PE, PET) by biobased fiber-based materials in critical functional packaging design areas. Mariya is a student in the Chemical Engineering Bachelor’s programme at The Hague University of Applied Sciences.
Her work included a thorough investigation of the current technologies and trends in fiber-based and plastic packaging. Subsequently several areas were defined where plastic packaging might be substituted by fiber-based packaging.
Adding great insights to the field has been a survey under 170 experts in the field. The same survey was also fed into an AI-chatbot that had been ‘knowledge augmented’ with an NVC curated database containing 300 recent and highly citated scientific publications on plastic and fiber-based packaging. The intrigueing differences in results between the expert views and the response by this AI-tool were also analysed.
