US: Container deposit scheme proposed for Maryland

23 February 2015

Legislation has been introduced to establish a container deposit scheme in Maryland. Under SB 684, beginning on January 1, 2017, all redeemable beverage containers would be required to display a refund value of five (5) cents and the word Maryland or the abbreviation MD. On the same date, wholesale and retail beverage pricing would need to include the refund value for the redeemable containers.
At the heart of SB 684 is the creation of a recycling organisation with the purpose of developing and operating the program in a manner to achieve a redeemable beverage container collection rate of at least 70% by 2022 (State Recycling Laws Update, 17 February 2015).
