Overview of vegetal fiber-based biocomposites

25 August 2015

In an article published in the Journal of Applied Polymer Science, researchers at the Unité Mixte de Recherche “Ingénierie des Agropolymères et Technologies Emergentes,” INRA/ENSA.M/UMII/CIRAD in France reviewed the knowledge on the functional properties of vegetal fiber-based biocomposites in food packaging applications
The first part summarizes the main characteristics and the processing routes. In the second part ways to better understand and control the mass transfer properties in biocomposites are discussed. Food safety aspects are also considered by highlighting possible undesirable migration. The review concludes with the main bottlenecks for biocomposites in food packaging applications.
