Application of PHA-based nanocomposites in food packaging

10 August 2015

Researchers at the Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Iran studied the potential of PHA, poly(hydroxyalkanoate), for food packaging. An article about the research is published in Chemical & Biochemical Engineering Quarterly.
They describe the most common biopolymers providing a brief overview of classification and application. This is followed by an outline of biopolymer production and a main section in which the properties of PHA-based nanocomposites are discussed. Several approaches for improvement of PHA properties are described and the role of nanotechnology to improve its mechanical properties is presented. The article also describes possible future trends.
