Trends in (packaged) food
Euromonitor has published a new report with the title “Trends Shaping the Future of the Food and Nutrition Industry.” You can download the report after filling in your details.
According to Deloitte’s annual report on the future of fresh food in the US, fresh food sales are up, however consumers are checking out more frozen alternatives.
According to industry statistics (1 MB) published by IBWA, the US bottled water market volume in 2020 grew faster than it did the year before and again enlarged by a much more vigorous rate than most other beverage categories.
A recent report (in Dutch, 720 kB) by WUR shows that the demand for and supply of food products with a sustainability label increased in the Netherlands in 2020. Spending increased by 7% in just one year, while total spending on food fell by 9%.

European pulp and paper industry
A new report (2.74 MB) by CEPI on the European pulp and paper industry shows that CEPI members produced 85.2 million tonnes of paper and board in 2020, a decrease of 4.8% compared to 2019.

Consumers and packaging waste
University of Florida research shows that consumers feel better about online meal kits in terms of waste generation when provided with fully recyclable packaging. Consumers perceive fully recyclable packaging as comparable to minimal packaging of in-store meal kits. The research is published in Food Quality and Preference (abstract).
According to a study (646 kB) by WRAP, the addition of a simply worded prompt to recycle on the front of packaging could drive up recycling rates.

Helping patients
In a Packaging Insights video, Dr. Laura Bix, professor at Michigan State University shares how her research team is currently using change detection technology to track what label information consumers pick up when inspecting medical packaging and what design features could better help them understand the product.
Illinois Tech students have created a device to empower people living with dementia. The packaging is a box that when opened folds into a flat “map” showing the relationship between all the pieces of the device. As they unpack the box, they see how it works and what they should do to connect it.

Market for printed labels and for coatings for paper and board
According to Smithers, the market for functional and barrier coatings for paper and board packaging will rise from $7.84 billion in 2021 to $9.97 billion in 2026. An overview is given in an infographic that you can download after filling in your details.

Dutch trade magazine Vraag en Aanbod publishes a weekly overview of the prices for plastics (in Dutch). The prices given are estimated averages between the gross prices published in the trade journals and the net prices.
