Layer-by-layer development of LDPE antimicrobial films

25 September 2015

Researchers at University College Cork in Ireland UV/ozone treated low-density polyethylene (LDPE) films and coated them using a layer-by-layer (LbL) technique by alternating the deposition of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) polymer solutions and antimicrobial silver (Ag). The effects on the antimicrobial activity against bacteria were investigated.
The results demonstrated that the LbL technique has the potential to be used as a coating method containing antimicrobial silver nanoparticles and that the manufactured films could potentially be applied as antimicrobial packaging. An article about the research is published in the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science.
