Characterisation of polylactide (PLA) bottles in the cosmetic market

20 November 2013

Biodegradable materials like polylactide (PLA) are interesting for cosmetic packaging application. However, these polymers, under environmental conditions or/and chemical treatments, can undergo “aging,” compromising their performances.
Researchers at the University of Pavia in Italy evaluated the properties of PLA bottles in the cosmetic market. They found that the heating process together with chemical treatment determined a significant modification on polymer, leading to a more resistant and fragile material, whereas the only physical or chemical treatment alone showed a plasticising effect. An article about the research is published in the Journal of Applied Polymer Science.
