NL: Health claims half of the labels of breakfast cereals unclear

01 September 2015

During the period March-October 2014 the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has checked the labels and websites of breakfast products on the proper use of nutrition and health claims.
Of the 126 labels of 24 brands of breakfast cereals 64 products (51%) were not fully compliant with the requirements. This was mainly caused by the fact that many of the health claims were unclear. Unclear health claims can easily be misunderstood by the consumer, making him or her think the product has larger health benefits than in reality. Companies that break the rules are required to adapt the packaging of their product (News item NVWA, 14 July 2015).
