EU: Plastic carrier bags - existing situation and challenges

In 2010, it was estimated that 98.6 billion plastic carrier bags were placed on the EU market and about 100 billion plastic bags have been placed additionally every year since. 8 billion of them end up in seas and other water recipients. The transposition of the ‘Directive 94/62/EC on packaging and packaging waste to reduce the consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags’ into the European Union member states’ national law is forthcoming. In an article published in Waste Management & Research, researchers at the National Technical University of Athens in Greece discuss the challenges and achieved outcomes from the implemented policy options in the various European Union member states.
