NL: EU authorises provisional measure on e-cigarettes

26 May 2015

The Netherlands have legitimate reasons to assume that electronic cigarettes and refill containers containing nicotine constitute a serious risk to human health. In 2013 and in 2014 43 cases of poisoning were reported. In 2013 the mixtures were ingested orally in 27 cases, among others by 8 children between 0 and 4 years old.
Therefore the Netherlands have issued the Provisional Food and Drugs Act electronic cigarette (Tijdelijk warenwetbesluit elektronische sigaret). The Commission, the other member states and EFSA were informed about this in March 2015. The Commission has authorised this provisional measure until 19 May 2016 (Newsletter Waar&Wet, 12 May 2015).
