Packaging EPR agreement signed in Brazil

15 December 2015

On November 25, Brazil’s Minister of Environment participated in the signing of the sectorial agreement (reverse logistics or extended producer responsibility agreement) on packaging waste.
Among the provisions of the sectoral agreement is a goal to reduce 22% of packaging waste being sent to landfills by 2017. However, recycling goals for individual packaging materials are not specified in the agreement while the types of packaging materials are. They are paper and paperboard, plastic, aluminum, steel, glass and cartons. Under the agreement, producers will be responsible for the collection of their end-of-life packaging (Recycling Laws International, 7 December 2015).
