Effects MAP on quality pomegranates during long-term storage

14 August 2015

Researchers at Akdeniz University in Turkey evaluated the effects of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the quality of pomegranates during long-term storage. Pomegranate fruit were harvested at commercial harvest maturity and packed in two different commercial types of MAP. Unpacked fruit stored in plastic boxes were used as control. They found that MAPs significantly reduced weight loss, maintained visual appearance and retarded skin discoloration compared to control fruit. There was no statistical difference in decay incidence between MAPs and control fruit at 210 days of cold storage. An article about the research is published in Postharvest Biology and Technology.
