Edible/biodegradable films made with pomegranate peel

27 October 2015

Pomegranate peels, residue from pomegranate juice extraction can be used as a source of pectins to make edible or biodegradable films. Researchers at the Institute of Food Research in the UK extracted pectin from pomegranate peels, and used it to produce films with different contents of montmorillonite (MMT) as a nanoreinforcement material. They found that the addition of MMT up to 6 g/100 g pectin was effective to improve tensile strength and elastic modulus of pomegranate peel pectin films. The water vapor permeability was decreased by increasing MMT contents up to 8 g/100 g pectin. However, the films presented poor elongation. An article about the research is published in Food Chemistry.
