NL: ECN demonstrates innovation to produce green plastics

26 February 2015

The Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) has demonstrated a new process to convert biomass and waste into valuable building blocks for the plastics industry. The process can handle almost any (cheap) feedstock ranging from non-food biomass and agricultural residues to mixed wastes. The product is a mixture of the aromatic molecules Benzene, Toluene, and Xylene (or BTX for short).
BTX is used to produce a range of products including beverage bottles and other packaging. ECN’s invention to produce BTX from biomass (bioBTX) is based on thermal gasification, where solid biomass or waste is converted into gaseous components (News Item ECN, 16 February 2015).
