Consumers expect e-commerce to double by 2020

23 November 2015

A study performed by GfK for ShoppingTomorrow researched the consumers’ expectations for the future of shopping. Results show that 36% of the consumers expect that they will travel less to city centres to go shopping. In 2020 the consumers expect an average of 38% of expenditures to be performed online.
The largest growth of the online channel is expected to be in the ‘food/near food’ sector. What now accounts for 2% of the online market share is expected to grow to 16% by 2020. This growth is also expected in the clothing sector, which is expected to grow to 29%. Notable is the consumer’s perception of the physical retail store, which will still play a big role in 2020.
