Biodegradable packaging and edible coatings for fruit and veg

26 March 2015

Foodstuffs are dynamic systems with specific requirements in terms of packaging. The right combination of product characteristics and packaging film is the basis for the development of appropriate storage conditions. Researchers at the University of Basilicata in Italy focused on the potential applications of biodegradable packaging and edible coating for minimally processed foods such as fresh cut fruit and vegetables.
They found that biopolymers have some limitations in terms of performance and that better results can be achieved by the combined use of biodegradable packaging with edible coatings. An article about the research is published in the Italian Journal of Food Science.
