Biodegradable film packaging for wild edible mushrooms

28 May 2015

Researchers at the Yunnan Minzu University in China evaluated the effect of PLA based biodegradable film packaging containing 0, 7.5, and 15 wt.% triethyl citrate plasticizer on the quality of Boletus edulis wild edible mushrooms. They found that mushrooms stored in these PLA films provided better retention of quality characteristics and received higher sensory ratings compared to mushrooms stored in pure PLA film and LDPE film. Results suggest that nisin in combination with plasticized PLA film has the potential to maintain wild edible mushroom quality and extend its postharvest life to 18 days. An article about the research is published in Innovative Food Science & Emerging Technologies.
