Switzerland: LCA study on beverage container recycling published in combination with results of 2013

29 September 2014

The Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) has released national beverage container recycling data for 2013. The data shows a 94% overall container recycling rate, up 1% from 2012. In 2013, 291,910 tons of containers were recycled.
Along with the 2013 data, FOEN released a summary of the findings from a life cycle analysis (LCA) on beverage container recycling that FOEN says confirms that the current systems of collection and recovery are justified from an environmental point of view. According to FOEN, the LCA indicates that recycling of container materials has a more beneficial effect on the environment than energy recovery (Recycling Laws International, 19 September 2014).
