USA: Another California city bans polystyrene foam carryout food packaging

26 September 2013

The El Cerrito City Council has approved Ordinance No 2013-04, which bans disposable food ware made from expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam. However, the City Manager can grant exemptions. The ordinance takes effect on January 1, 2014, but will not be enforced until July 1, 2014, giving food retailers six months to transition away from EPS.
Last year, a state bill that would have banned EPS foam carryout food packaging failed passage in the California Legislature, contributing to an expanding patchwork of city and county ordinances (State Recycling Laws Update, 24 September 2013).
