No scientific evidence that graphic warning labels on packs of cigarettes are effective

There is no scientific evidence that graphic warning labels, such as the familiar warnings on packs of cigarettes, are effective. Even the graphic images used in other countries to deter smokers are not having the desired effect of making people smoke less. The images and warnings can even be counterproductive: they actually make some people smoke more. Researchers at Maastricht University have recently published their findings in Health Psychology Review (News Item Maastricht University, 13 August 2012).
