FoodDrinkEurope: Guidance on the Provision of Food Information to Consumers, September 2013 Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011 – free press release and guidance

17 September 2013

Following an evaluation of the legislation on food labelling by the European Commission’s Directorate- General for Consumer and Health, the European Commission issued in 2008 a proposal which would combine 2 major Directives (Directive 2000/13/EC1 and Directive 90/496/EEC2) into one Framework Regulation (Regulation 1169/2011). The Regulation establishes a legal framework in the European Union with regard to information related to foodstuffs provided to consumers by food business\operators at all stages of the food chain. A Guidance launched by FoodDrinkEurope and EuroCommerce helps to facilitate a common understanding between European retailers and manufacturers on the requirements of EU labelling rules which will enter into force in December 2013.
The provisions apply to all foods intended for the final consumer, including foods delivered by mass caterers, and foods intended for supply to mass caterers. Areas that are covered by the Regulation are amongst others nutrition information, origin labelling, legibility and allergens labelling.
Developed largely with the aim of assisting small and medium-sized food business operators and interested national authorities, the document is dynamic, attractive, and easy-to-read. The document should help those operators to comply with the new EU Regulation when they implement its requirements in practice (Press Release FoodDrinkEurope, 12 September 2013).
