Thousands of tonnes of fake food and drink seized in INTERPOL-Europol operation

14 March 2014

More than 1,200 tonnes of fake or substandard food and nearly 430,000 litres of counterfeit drinks have been seized in an INTERPOL-Europol coordinated operation across 33 countries in the Americas, Asia and Europe. Fish and seafood represented the largest category of foodstuffs seized. Some 685 tons were recovered for offences including being incorrectly labelled.
Targeting the organized crime networks behind the illicit trade in counterfeit and unregulated food and drink, Operation Opson III was conducted throughout December 2013 and January 2014. It involved police, customs, national food regulatory bodies and partners from the private sector (Press Release INTERPOL, 14 February 2014).
