Blisters Packaging Fingerprinting of Viagra® and Cialis® using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) allied to Chemometric Methods

26 February 2014

The production of counterfeit drugs is a criminal problem that carries serious risks to public health in the worldwide. In this article the chemical fingerprinting of blisters packaging using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, FTIR, is demonstrated. Fifteen commercial samples (Viagra® and Cialis®) and thirty two counterfeit samples (Viagra and Cialis) were analysed.
Using unsupervised methods, samples were separated into three large groups: i) counterfeit Viagra; ii) authentic Viagra®; iii) and Cialis and some samples of Viagra. This suggests the existence of three different types of forming films for blisters packaging (Analytical Methods, 8 January 2014).
